Mother fix

Ahhh. I’ve had my fix.

This afternoon the girls decided to paint. All three of them. It was their own idea. Out came the paints, the water dish, the newspaper to cover the floor, and on went the smocks. For about half an hour, they worked in mother-purring co-operative way, designing and creating a house for Four’s mermaid.

“I was thinking of blue for that part. What do you think?”
“Let’s draw the doors here. Is that OK with you?
“How about we cut it now?
Purr, purr, purr.

As the minutes ticked by, my heart hungrily soaked up more and more of the pleasantly co-operative play. I could feel pleasure and love topping me up again, and dispelling the annoyance and resentment that had built during the very ordinary and regular Saturday of bickering and demands. Gradually, gradually my Mother Love Tank was slowly but steadily replenished. And even though the activity finished quite some time ago, I’m still feeling full of warm and squishy love.

I often think Mothering is like an addiction. The children throw us a fix every now that enables us to tolerate long, sometimes ever so long, periods of torment and distress. Then, just when we think we are about to hit rock bottom, and that we can’t push ourselves any further, there’s another moment of delight and joy to top us up and keep us going.

I’ve had my fix now. Ahhhh!
